This report presents 94 cases of splenorenal shunt for bleeding esophageal varices from 1956 to 1980. According to the period of operation, the patients were divided into three groups; <3 days, 3-29 days and≥30 days. The safest period for operation was found≥30 days, although the patient would venture on a chance of rebleeding. We have performed endoscopic sclerotherapy in order to bring the patient to the safest period, especially those with impaired liver function.
