Discoid meniscus is very common in China. Discoid meniscus occurs more often in the lateral than in the medial. The ultrastructure of the discoid lateral meniscus ( DLM ) is different from that of the normal meniscus. And the DLM is more easily to be torn because of increased thickness and abnormal vascularity. Articular cartilage lesions usually present with DLM tears. Articular cartilage lesions will accelerate the degeneration of the knee, and may cause knee osteoarthritis ( OA ). Recently, many research focus on the relation between DLM tear and cartilage lesions or OA. The progress of studies on DLM and the relation between DLM and OA are reviewed in this manuscript.
