This brief note reports that the study undertaken by the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research confirms fertility decline in Bangladesh during the past five years. Fertility rates from the 1993-94 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) were 3.4 births per woman. The demographic database from Matlab consisting of a sample of 3039 ever-married women showed similar fertility figures. The same consulting group conducted both surveys, and questionnaires were exactly the same. Other findings were that contraceptive prevalence was slightly lower than the DHS accounts. Infant mortality in the treatment area was similar to the DHS accounts. The comparison area showed slightly lower rates.
