Objective To analyze the misdiagnosis causes of multiple myeloma ( MM ) and to improve the understanding and diagnosis of MM in clinical practice. Methods The clinical data of 1 misdiagnosed patient with MM who had vertebral compression fractures repeatedly after percutaneous kyphoplasty ( PKP ) were retrospectively analyzed. The misdiagnosis causes were analyzed with clinical manifestations, laboratory examination, imageological examination and misdiagnosed diseases. Conclusions The misdiagnosis causes of MM are complex. Clinicians should inquire patients’ detailed history, perform physical examination carefully, evaluate the laboratory and imageological examinations thoroughly and carry out the pathological examination as needed so as to avoid misdiagnosis.
