Statins are 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A ( HMG-CoA ) reductase inhibitors, which inhibit the endogenous synthesis of cholesterol.Recent studies have shown that statins can promote the proliferation of osteoblasts and bone formation and increase the mRNA level in bone morphogenetic protein 2 ( BMP2 ) in vitro. The literatures relevant to the experimental research on statins for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis are summarized and analyzed in the paper, and the mechanism of anti-osteoporosis and application prospects of statins are brielfy reviewed.
